Brazil’s new president is reversing years of over-regulation in that country in order to combat rampant gun crime.

The Wall Street Journal reports Brazil logged 64,000 homicides in 2017, the world’s highest number. 70% of those crimes involved the use of firearms.

In response, ex-army captain and now President, Jair Bolsonaro, has now promised to relax the country’s 15 year-old gun legislation saying, “All the hoodlums already have guns, it’s only the good guys who don’t!”

Bolsonaro said Saturday that he plans to issue a decree allowing all Brazilians without criminal records to own firearms.

Bolsonaro took the oath of office as President on January 1st. President Trump congratulated him in a tweet, saying ‘the U.S.A. is with you!’

Bolsonaro quickly replied on Twitter, thanking Trump for his encouragement.
