Authorities in Virginia say former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax is dead after a shooting inside his family home that left his wife dead in what police are describing as a murder-suicide.
Investigators say the incident happened early Thursday in Annandale during what they called a “messy divorce.”
Police say the couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time.
The investigation is ongoing.

The French government is urging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to release an 86-year-old French woman who has been held in immigration custody after being detained earlier this month.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Marie Thérèse Ross in Alabama on April 1 after authorities say she overstayed her 90-day visa.
She is currently being held at a federal immigration detention facility in Louisiana.
French officials have raised concerns about the case and are pressing for her release as diplomatic discussions continue with U.S. authorities.
A man has been charged in a string of deadly attacks across the Atlanta suburbs that left two women dead and another person critically injured.
Authorities say the suspect, a 26-year-old U.S. citizen, is accused of carrying out three early morning attacks in separate locations.
One of the victims was a Department of Homeland Security employee who officials say was killed while walking her dog.
Investigators believe at least one of the attacks may have been random, and the case has drawn national attention as authorities continue working to determine a motive.

The president is expected to highlight benefits for workers, including those who earn tips and overtime, saying many are seeing larger returns this tax season.
The trip is part of a broader push to spotlight the administration’s economic policies ahead of Tax Day.
Trump is also scheduled to travel to Phoenix tomorrow to attend a Turning Point USA event, continuing his outreach efforts.
The White House says peace talks with Iran are ongoing, as efforts continue to reach a deal to end the conflict.
Officials say discussions remain active and productive, with the possibility of another round of negotiations in the coming days.
Pakistan is expected to play a key role as a mediator, with talks potentially resuming there after earlier negotiations failed to produce an agreement.
Despite ongoing military tensions, the administration says it is optimistic about the chances of reaching a deal, even as a fragile ceasefire deadline approaches.

A California attorney who advised President Donald Trump on efforts to overturn the 2020 election has been disbarred.
The California Supreme Court ordered John Eastman’s law license revoked, citing misconduct and false claims related to the election.
Officials say Eastman misled courts and public officials in advancing his legal strategy, while his attorney argues the ruling raises constitutional concerns about free speech and legal advocacy.
Eastman says he plans to appeal the decision, marking a major development in the legal fallout from the 2020 election.
The Republican-led Senate has rejected the latest Democratic attempt to halt President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. The Senate on Wednesday turned aside a resolution that would require the U.S. to withdraw forces from the conflict until Congress authorizes further action. It was the fourth time this year the Senate has voted to cede its war powers to Trump in a conflict that Democrats say is illegal and unjustified. Republicans say they will keep faith in Trump’s wartime leadership, for now, citing Iran’s nuclear capabilities and the high stakes of withdrawal. But GOP lawmakers are also anxious for the conflict to end.
An Atlanta man has been charged in a string of attacks over a matter of hours that left two women dead and a man in critical condition. One of the women, Lauren Bullis, worked for the Department of Homeland Security. Her killing on Monday led Homeland Secretary Markwayne Mullin to issue a statement raising concerns that the 26-year-old defendant, U.K.-native Olaolukitan Adon Abel, was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022, when Democrat Joe Biden was president. Mullin cataloged a litany of the defendant’s previous alleged crimes, but he didn't specify whether they happened before Adon Abel was granted citizenship. Authorities are looking into whether the victims were targeted at random.
