Natalia Makhail earns $10,000 grant for advancing linguistic identity in the age of AI.
Natalia’s project, “Preserving Linguistic Identity in the Age of AI Automation,” explores how automated systems like autocorrect, predictive text, and content moderation can unintentionally suppress nonstandard language forms, such as slang, indigenous expressions, and cultural code-switching. Her goal is to help ensure that AI technologies preserve and celebrate linguistic diversity rather than diminish it.
Beyond her academic achievements, Natalia has demonstrated strong leadership by promoting awareness of how technology affects cultural expression and inspiring her peers to use AI responsibly. She plans to apply to USC, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, and UCI, where she hopes to continue her studies in linguistics and artificial intelligence, using her grant money to help fund her college education.
“ As a Gen Z student, I see firsthand how social media shapes how we speak and express ourselves,” said Natalia Makhail. “My goal is to help young people from every culture preserve their authentic voices online and ensure that AI evolves in a way that celebrates—not erases—our differences.”
“Natalia’s research reflects the kind of innovation driving the future of AI,” said Ken Young, an MCA representative. “Her leadership and focus on protecting linguistic identity through technology highlight how data, ethics, and automation can enhance—not replace—human communication.”
