Singer Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Singer Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth has died of liver failure at his home in Boise, Idaho. Harwell was 56. The band’s manager had announced only yesterday that Harwell was in hospice care. Smash Mouth’s hits include “Walkin’ on the Sun,” “All Star” and a remake of The Monkees’ song “I’m A Believer.” Harwell retired from Smash Mouth two years ago, saying he suffered from long-term heart and brain issues. Smash Mouth announced last year that singer Zach Goode was taking over vocal duties.

Jimmy Buffett was constantly promoting himself

PALM BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Jimmy Buffett was a hustler when he started his career, and he continued to be a self-promoter his whole life. Buffett said in a 1998 interview when he was a nobody, he’d look for his records in stores and put them at the front. Even after he saw some success, he would travel with his merchandise to give away in countries around the Caribbean. He said that was often more valuable than money, especially in getting him out of trouble. Buffett died on Friday at the age of 76.

Patrick Dempsey lived in fear while filming “Ferrari”

VENICE, Italy (AP) - Patrick Dempsey actively pursued a role in the upcoming film “Ferrari,” about Italian car mogul Enzo Ferrari. When he was cast as Italian race car driver Piero Taruffi, he wondered whether he should have reconsidered. Dempsey says some of the racing sequences were shot at night with terrible visibility, and they “kept going faster, faster, faster.” There was no roll cage on the car. Dempsey says it was “exhilarating” and “really frightening,” but it did give a perspective on what drivers in the 1950s were risking. “Ferrari” is playing at the Venice Film Festival and will open in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day.
