How Should Christians Interact with Governments Operating Contrary to Biblical Principles?

Christians are called to live under authority with a spirit of respect and submission, as taught in Romans 13, yet their ultimate allegiance must remain with God. When governments enact laws or promote values that directly oppose biblical truth, believers are to follow the example set in Acts 5:29—“We must obey God rather than men.”

Daniel provides a compelling model: he served faithfully within a pagan regime, showing integrity and wisdom without compromising his devotion to the Lord. Even when forbidden to pray, he continued his practice quietly and reverently, accepting the consequences with grace.

Rather than withdrawing from society, Christians are to remain engaged as salt and light in the world, influencing culture while staying rooted in God’s Word. Scripture also calls believers to pray for those in leadership (1 Timothy 2:1-2), show honor where it is due, and live peaceably—without endorsing unrighteousness. When civil disobedience becomes necessary, it should be carried out with humility, reverence, and a readiness to suffer for righteousness, just as Peter encourages in 1 Peter 3:14-17.
