When The Hatred Keeps On Rolling

We began the week just past trying to figure out a guy that wanted to shoot the president. We ended it looking at how hatred had eroded decency so much that the DOJ wanted to prosecute nuns for daring to believe Christian doctrine. I wish it stopped with hating nuns, but no – Maine Democrats have gone and effectively crowned a guy that claims he is not a Nazi while sporting a Nazi tattoo. Jim Geraghty did his best to point out how remarkably absurd it is. It was funny when Monty Python pointed out the absurdity of Nazism because it was in the rearview mirror. It is not funny when one of the major parties in this nation selects one to stand for U.S. Senate and you can see Nazism out of the windshield.
A significant portion of this nation is lost – completely. They have no moral sense and no decency. I have watched this slide through my life as if watching The Screwtape Letters (See this week’s interview with Joseph Loconte to learn just how applicable Screwtape is to this current situation.) or That Hideous Strength actually happen. I have comforted myself with the notion that it was a small minority. I pray it is still a minority and the rise of Platner is some sort of fluke. But fluke notwithstanding, the fact that things have gotten this far indicates that the minority is growing and no longer small.
The politics of this are a huge problem and they have the most immediate consequences. But they are not the real problem. Earlier this week, examining the shooting, I look at the decline of a Christian ethos in this nation and the accompanying decline of cultural influence of the church – particularly the Protestant denominations. Ultimately the blame for a Nazi receiving the Democrat nomination for Senate in the State of Maine belongs to the church – not any specific church, but all of us.
When society began to push back on the church, we sought “relevancy” and change when we should have stood firm. We conformed when we should have stood out like a sore thumb. We ignored this simple admonition from Paul, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” It was no different than Screwtape advising Wormwood to ply his “patient” with peer pressure, and watching that patient slowly drift away from God.
God sounds pretty angry towards Judah and Israel when they wander. I don’t think God is ready to rain fire on us just yet. But I do think we best start finding our way back in the right direction. We can see where continuing on the path we are currently on leads. That is one history I do not want to see repeated.
(I hate to thunder like that, like some sort of TV preacher – but the thought of a Nazi getting even close to the Senate – God save us!)
Other Stuff:
In the plus column, we may be seeing revival. But I have no clue what that will look like. This guy ties conservatism and Christianity a bit too closely, but the stats are promising.
The new Rust Belt. There will be a lot more to come here.
As a “Boomer,” I grow weary of the Boomer bashing. Yes, we outnumber younger generations and that can create some stress. But we are generous to a fault and forward thinking. we earned what we have and you can count on us to use it wisely.
Ah, California – the gift that just keep on giving. Up to its eyeballs in fraud. Its flagship industry withering like a weed sprayed with Round-Up. Forced to apologize for over-regulating. So what do they do? Regulate more. Like teachers and parents are completely incapable of thinking independently
